On Friday August 9th, Disney released the official trailer for the new live action Snow White movie directed by Mark Webb. Disney has been continuously releasing live action versions of its most popular showings, casting real actors to bring the enchanting stories to life.
This time Snow White is being remade, which is one of the most meaningful pictures ever released by Disney. Being the first ever Disney princess, Snow White holds a large amount of significance for the company and community. The movie will have a $209 million budget, allowing for beautiful sets and breathtaking costumes.
When Does it Come Out?
The movie will be officially released in theaters on March 21, 2025. Originally it was supposed to come out in March, 202 but was moved to be released one year further.
This is because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which made it hard for the movie to continue to be made.
Rachel Zegler as Snow White
The movie features Rachel Zegler as Snow White. The 23 year old actress has won a Golden Globe for Best Actress as a result of her stunning performance in West Side Story. She recently portrayed Lucy Gray in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Zegler has expressed her excitement about her upcoming ability to play Disney’s first ever princess. She discussed in interviews how she knows how much little girls look up to Disney princesses and is honored to have the chance to bring one to life.
Gal Gadot’s Alluring Evil Queen
Gal Gadot is another highly renowned actress that will have a large part in the upcoming film. She has become increasingly popular for her portrayal of Wonder Woman.
She is enthusiastic to play the Evil Queen in the film, including being able to sing as well as act. She claimed that playing a role like this is something she’s never done before and welcomes the change in opportunity with open arms.
How Was the Trailer Released?
Fans were shown the teaser to the upcoming release at this year’s D23 expo in Anaheim, California. The D23 expo lasts for three days and is filled with different teasers, trailers, and announcements for Disney’s upcoming endeavors.
This year, the trailer for the new movie was presented to the public. It features Rachel Zegler’s Snow White singing to and interacting with animals, glimpsing into a well, and taking an apple from the Evil Queen herself.
The Shocking Controversy
The new adaptation of Snow White has caused a few fans to feel distressed and upset. The writers of the picture tweaked the storyline to make Snow White more of an independent woman. Instead of having a prince, she is on her own.
She doesn’t seek out true love and doesn’t need any male figure in her life to function. She instead seeks more of a leadership role in the world. She wants to be seen as a leader rather than being seen as someone’s partner.
What do Fans Think of This Change?
While some people are excited about the decision to make Snow White more of an independent woman, some fans are not in favor of the drastic difference.
People believe that though portraying females as powerful is very important, the original storyline has been altered too heavily and the film doesn’t even feel the same.
Let Down Little People
One of the other reasons for backlash against the live action Snow White is the lack of casting little people in the film. Rather than casting little people actors to play the dwarves, Disney decided to use CGI to create the dwarves.
Many people have publicly shared their negative feelings about this decision on social media. Peter Dinklage, a well known actor, spoke out about his dislike towards Disney for celebrating casting a Latina actress as Snow White and then proceeding to use CGI to create the dwarves.
A Little Creepy?
Not only are people upset about the lack of casting of actual little people in the film, but the animations themselves don’t look quite right. Because they are edited to look like real people, they don’t make sense edited next to the real-life Rachel Zegler.
They are slightly disproportionate and don’t match the quality of the real person standing next to them. Critics expressed how much they feel that Disney missed out on the opportunity to hire more diverse actors for these roles rather than scrapping them altogether.
Music: New and Old
The soundtrack of the new release will highlight a variety of pieces. There will be some comebacks of the songs from the original movie such as “Whistle While you Work” as well as new songs written just for the remake.
These new songs are written by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, who worked on the soundtrack of the new Aladdin that came out five years ago.
