In a new interview, Hollywood star Kevin Costner has revealed what he and Prince William talked about when they met in London.
For over twenty-five years, rumors have swirled regarding Costner’s relationship with England’s royal family. Specifically, his friendship with the beloved Princess Diana has been speculated about. Does this interview finally give us the details about this potential royal relationship?
Who is Kevin Costner?
Kevin Costner is an American actor and filmmaker. He has starred in a multitude of films, including The Untouchables (1987), Field of Dreams (1989), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), The Bodyguard (1992), The Company Men (2010), and The Highwaymen (2019).
Costner is also a director. He both directed and starred in The Postman (1997) and Open Range (2003). He has also been in TV shows like Yellowstone and has toured his country music.
Speculation and Rumors
Before Princess Diana’s tragic death, there were many rumors about a potential romantic connection between her and Costner.
Diana was Princess of Wales and married to then Prince Charles III. She was the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Their royal marriage suffered greatly and she and Charles divorced in 1996.
A Meeting With Prince William
Costner recounted a special meeting he once had with Prince William. “I happened to be in England, and I got this message that the prince would love to talk, and I said, ‘What?’… and then I went, ‘Okay,’ ” Costner recalled.
“We met in this room, and it was just us,” he described. “He walked up, and we shook hands… The first line out of his mouth was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you.’”
Costner’s Impression of the Prince
Costner didn’t go into much more detail when he was interviewed by People magazine, but he said that the Prince was “very sweet.”
He added that he has “such fond memories of who he was, how [he] was approached and what [they] talked about.”
A Royal Introduction
Kevin Costner was introduced to Princess Di by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. There was an immediate spark between Costner and Diana.
“It was so sweet. Sarah was the one that set this up,” Costner explained. “Sarah was very cool… when she could have been going, ‘Well, I’m a princess too. What about me?’ She didn’t do that at all. Diana and I began to talk.”
A Sequel to a Smash-Hit
In 1992, Costner was in a drama called The Bodyguard. This is the movie that Whitney Houston’s incredibly famous cover of “I Will Always Love You” is from—she co-starred in the film.
After meeting, Diana and Costner explored the idea of collaborating on a sequel to the movie. Costner recalled, “There was a moment that that was really flying down the tracks, very quietly, because it’s how I operate.”
What a Sequel Could Have Been
In The Bodyguard, Frank (Kevin Costner) is assigned to protect famous actress Rachel (Whitney Houston). They have a tumultuous love affair that, unfortunately, does not have a happily ever after.
What could happen in a possible sequel is all speculation. Princess Diana would most likely have made her film debut as the leading lady. Perhaps Frank would have been sent to protect her character next—and maybe, this time, the relationship would have worked out.
Scrapping the Sequel
In a terrible accident, Princess Diana died in 1997. According to the Mirror US, Costner remembered that “when Diana passed, about a year later it had leaked out that I was prepping Bodyguard 2 with her.”
“And what happened was, the Royal Family kind of turned on me a little bit,” he said. “Ultimately, the project was ditched because things got kind of ugly.” Fortunately, though, it seems that Costner’s relationship with the Royal Family has improved since then.
An Unusual and Beautiful Life
Kevin Costner looks back on his time with Diana fondly. It is one of the highlights in his iconic 40-year career.
“I’ve had an incredibly unusual, and for the most part, beautiful life,” says Costner. Although we may never know details about him and Diana, it is reassuring that his relationship with the royals seems to have been repaired.
