Cats: stars of a plethora of animated media, a multitude of memes, and one aptly named musical. Although some of these adorable companions can be a bit outwardly aloof, most are absolute sweethearts when you get familiar with one another.
However, even if you own a cat, you may not know why they do some of the strange behaviors they exhibit. Also, if you are thinking about getting a cat, you will want to be familiar with their body language; if you’re cosmically inclined, you will have to make sure that your zodiac sign is compatible with cats, too. In this article, we’ll go over some of the strange behaviors that cats exhibit and why they do it, as well as whether or not you’re a cat person based on your zodiac sign.
Affectionate Head-Butting
If you own a cat or have been around a particularly friendly one, you may have noticed that they tend to bump their tiny noggins into your legs, face, arm, or other available body part. This soft head-bump doesn’t mean they want to start a fight like a deer, though. It’s actually a gesture of love!
The cat’s head-bump, also called “bunting,” indicates that it trusts you and feels safe around you. It’s sort of like their special way of saying hi. In addition, when they rub against something—including your body—it marks the person or object as safe and trustworthy.
Laying on Your Laptop
Many cat owners are familiar with the following scene: you’re working on something very important on your computer, and your cat jumps on your desk and plops down directly on top of the keyboard. Cats are particularly talented at writing… paragraphs of random key-smash gibberish while rolling on a keyboard, that is.
Most cats are patient to a point. If they feel that they need attention from you they’ll make sure to get between you and the object that you’re paying more attention to. Some cats also are genuinely curious about what their owners are up to. Cats are also territorial, which means that they’ll rub their scent on your beloved objects so that other cats know who you belong to.
Kneading or “Making Biscuits”
When kittens are born, they have an instinct to push on their mother’s mammary glands in order to stimulate her into producing more milk to drink. This is a survival tactic. Although adult cats obviously do not nurse anymore, the kneading motion stays with them throughout their whole lives.
Many cat behavior specialists believe that cats knead when they’re feeling happy and content or when they feel like they need to relieve some stress. Adult cats tend to do the motion when they associate a soft surface (or sometimes your body) with the memories of their mother.
Pawing at their Water Bowl
Most cats don’t like water…at least submerging themselves in water, that is. In fact, even though it is odd, some cats love the water. No matter how your cat feels about bathing, all cats need to drink water and most have a water bowl they can drink from throughout the day. Some cats stick their paws into their water and splash it around. Most likely, they’re just playing.
However, many cats actually prefer drinking fresh, moving water. You can actually purchase bubbling water fountains for your cat if they are very particular about their water. When cats splash their water bowl, it is actually their way of aerating the water and making it move. Their little paws are attempting to to give it the bubbling effect of a natural spring or even water from the tap.
Crazy Catnip Reactions
To humans, catnip doesn’t seem like a particularly interesting plant. Catnip is a leafy plant that is related to mint. Cats, however, find this plant particularly wonderful. Catnip contains an oil called nepetalactone. This oil stimulates certain sensors in cats’ noses.
Around 70 percent of cats have a feeling of extreme joy when they encounter catnip. In some cases, cats even have hallucinogenic experiences due to catnip. When exposed to catnip, your cat may run around in a sort of crazy manner, roll, salivate, and make weird noises. The effects last about ten minutes.
Most cats love catnip, but are you likely to love cats? Now, let’s see what zodiac signs tend to be most compatible with cats.
Aries and Taurus
Aries individuals are born between March 21st and April 19th. An Aries may bond with a cat, and if they do, the bond between pet and owner would be unbreakable. However, many cats are aloof and Aries may find their nonchalant behavior to be boring and annoying. Additionally, Aries are easy to anger and if untrained, a cat could cause destruction to your home; this would cause most Aries people to lose it.
Taurus individuals are born between April 20th and May 20th. Tauruses love to relax and be pampered. Lots of Tauruses enjoy creature comforts, like good food and baths. Although most cats hate baths, Tauruses and cats certainly have a cute connection. You and a cuddy pet cat would almost certainly become the best of homebody buddies.
Gemini and Cancer
Gemini individuals are born between May 21st and June 20th. People who are Geminis are often very curious and charismatic. Some Geminis have a sort of “split-personality;” they may act one way in certain environments while they act almost like a different person in another. Cats share many traits with Geminis. They are often curious. They may quickly change energy levels: one moment they’re napping and the next they are playing with a toy or zooming around the house.
Cancer individuals are born between June 21st and July 22nd. Cancers are highly intuitive and sensitive. They are often comfort-seeking. As a Cancer, it’s sort of a 50/50 shot of whether or not you’re a cat person. Some cats don’t have much of a connection to their owner, and you would not find any joy in owning a pet like this. However, there are also cats that are very affectionate. If you’re looking to adopt a pet cat, then make sure they have a sweet and friendly, cuddly and loving personality.
Leo and Virgo
Leo individuals are born between July 23rd and August 22nd. Leos tend to be loyal, passionate, and dramatic. Also, they’re represented by a big cat: a lion! These big personalities would find a humorous connection to a dramatic and charming kitty. Leos can be fond of luxury goods, and who wouldn’t want to add a bold and theatrical cat to their opulent life?
Virgo individuals are born between August 23rd and September 22nd. Virgos are logical, practical, and perfectionistic. They can appear judgemental, but underneath it all, have good intentions. Most Virgos would absolutely vibe with a cat companion. They might respect the methodical hunting skills that cats have (even if they’re just hunting a laser pointer) and would relate to many cat’s seemingly unfriendly exterior.
Libra and Scorpio
Libra individuals are born between September 23rd and October 22nd. Libras, which are represented by a scale, have a fixation on establishing equilibrium. Some can be obsessed with symmetry and perfection. Although some Libras admit to hating feeling alone, a cat might not be your perfect companion. Pets are generally messy and can be difficult to manage. Although most Libras would probably prefer a cat over a dog, a pretty and well-researched fish tank may be the best option.
Scorpio individuals are born between October 23rd and November 21st. They can be described as elusive and mysterious and are often wise. They are comfortable in silence and sometimes very serious. Scorpios would probably relate to most cats who have been connected to magic and mystery in folklore for hundreds of years. A cat could be a similarly quiet companion that would fit the vibe of most Scorpios.
Sagittarius and Capricorn
Sagittarius individuals are born between November 22nd and December 21st. They are emotional, friendly, and always on a quest for new knowledge and experiences. These loud and energetic individuals would most likely not get along with most cats. An energetic dog or exotic pet like a parrot would be much more suited to the style of a Sagittarius.
Capricorn individuals are born between December 22nd and January 19th. They value patience, perseverance, and dedication. Capricorns are responsible and can take a long while to warm up to people. Capricorns will absolutely find solace in a cat; they are definitely creatures that they could relate to. Many cats also take a long time to warm up to new people, but once familiar and friendly with each other, the bond between a Capricorn and their cat would be unbreakable.
Aquarius and Pisces
Aquarius individuals are born between January 20th and February 18th. They are creative, innovative, progressive, and revolutionary. Aquarius is dedicated to making the world a better place. If you are an Aquarius, you may like cats—but not for their beauty or independence. Aquarius people that like cats enjoy them far more for their silly antics and memeability; they might share pictures of their cats online in order to make people laugh.
Pisces individuals are born between February 19th and March 20th. Pisces people are intuitive, sensitive, and empathetic. They are often romantic and fantastical. Most cats are smart and quiet and once you get to know them, empathetic towards and protective of their owners. Also, the Pisces symbol is two fish—and who likes fish more than cats?
